So one thing I'm always frustrated by is the lack of separation of church and state in the Bible belt. I live in Memphis and when I moved here I was really surprised at not only how many churches are here, but how big they all are. The one thing that particularly annoys me is that they stop traffic to allow the churches to empty, weekdays or weekends. But what really gets me is they use city cops to do this. I know the rules are across the country for stopping with a school traffic guard, but I always wonder, is there a law that I have to stop for their church function? Of course because I'm a moral law abiding citizen, I always stop, but it never stops me from getting mad and thinking "I'm just gonna drive through!" Does anyone else go through this or does anyone know if there are any laws that say I have to stop? Just frustrating!

Well police provide the same function for directing traffic around sports stadiums, large events such as concerts, 4th of July celebrations, graduations at large institutions or any other place large numbers of people arrive and leave en masse. I have just seen it as another instance of that. Maybe looking at it that way would help.

Consider their continued tax exemption ..and you’ll wanna spit nails! Shit, they don’t pay for the streets, police service, water infrastructure, fire protection… They’re freeloaders! But ‘the deal is,’ they (in turn) won’t become involved with government… Right … as their followers march lock-step to the voting booths to elect whichever ultra regressive candidate was suggested by the men in charge..

As they appear to be either empty or falling down in Europe, ‘over here’ their size remains competitive! ...good thing we’re not in the same car..

Oh, definitely! I guess I'm just a hater because I didn't think of such a great making scheme!!

@bohica1369 That’s right! You passed up your immoral opportunity to become filthy rich 😉

As for my rant above ..I forgot to mention education/ schools, anything included in property taxes, churches are exempt … in my neck of the woods, that even includes garbage disposal..

There is probably an ordinance that allows police to control the flow if traffic, which they would argue covers non religious events as well, like concerts and such.

I'm sure they do, but it doesn't stop it from being frustrating.

If they use police for traffic control, you have to stop.

I feel ya though, I live in small town Indiana, and all the nods to the church in our laws and enforcement are sickening.

True! Like I said, I do stop because morally it's the right thing to do because they are officers. But wait, I thought athiests couldn't have morals? Nevermind, that's just what brainwashed people are indoctrinated to believe...??

Rebuilding that church/state separation is yet another problem we'll have, after we get back some sanity and constitutionality in this country.

I'm as far away from the ''deep south'' as you can get, but there are three churches within 5 blocks of my house and, every Sunday....the faithful just cheerfully jaywalk across streets, going to their cars. Apparently, they've all been cleansed or something....and they're safe when they've been ''washed in the blood of the lamb.'' (Isn't that just the most gross phrase?)

These are usually the first people who advocate for allowing bad things to happen to protesters if they impede traffic in any way.

I think of all of those pastors in those big fancy churches living like gazillionairs while so many of thier flock live paycheck to paycheck. They have the nerve to continually ask for more and more money, then when the city floods you close your doors so nobody messes up your nice money maker( Yes, I’m talking to you Olsteen)
