What do you do to get ready for winter. Part of my ritual is to get lots of firewood.

To prepare for winter hiking

  1. Put long gaiters, micro-spikes and snowshoes in the car trunk.

  2. Switch winter hiking clothes to the front of the closet.

  3. Add my backpacking down comforter and foam pad to sit on snow.

  4. Switch to insulated water bottles.

  5. Carry extra gloves and mittens in my pack. Also waterproof glove covers.

Taking a break blowing out the driveway. Winter is so much fun.

Great pictures Hiker

I no longer snow shoe race but this is back in 2004. Climate change put an end to these races. We don't get a consistent snow cover.

My firewood gathering days feel over.. 33 years of heating with wood. Now it’s ‘working for the man’ in order to keep my propane (God’s Gas) tank full and electric bills paid 🙂 Love Fall, though ~

I live in Chicago and I'm a fairly talented seamstress, so I am making myself a fabulous new coat.

I live in Florida. What is this winter of which you speak?
And how can I get some?

Full shoes instead of sandals and flip-flops.

Hoodies over T-shirts

Long pants instead of shorts.

Laugh - because there won't be any snow !

Drag out the warm clothes and snow scrapers and such and wish I lived in a house and could build a fire.

I get depressed.

There are good drugs for that. I know!

I have two wood stoves and burn about 7 facecord. The picture is just the tip of the iceberg.

Like you I’ve got loads of logs,.I had two mighty trees cut down earlier in the year because they had become unstable and I had fears they could fall on the house. I also have oil fired central heating and had 900 litres delivered yesterday......£470!

I simply hope that winter is mild because I'm always in denial that it's coming and when it hits.

Mine too. A woodstove heats most of my house. I love it!

I burn about 4 1/2 to 5 cords a winter and every year I wonder if this will be the last year I can do it. It's all cut split and stacked for another year.

Looks like you're set for the next ice age. Enjoy that crackling blaze this winter!

Add a shovel to emergency supplies in my car trunk.

@Bendog

Very funny! It's to dig out my car if it gets stuck in snow, especially on mountain passes.

I already have granular kitty litter for traction on ice.

@Bendog

I loathe cats. I love Dave Barry's joke about cats:

"If left to their own devices, cats would lead humans into a whirling blade."

@LiterateHiker Aw, you make me sad. Cats are the best. They would murder us all in our sleep, of course, if they were bigger and had opposable thumbs. But they don't, so we're good.

Yep make a pile then add 10x more to it.
