SPECULATE: CAN ATHEISM BE SPREAD LIKE FAITH?

Religion has become rich, powerful, and ubiquitous through aggressive marketing and branding. At any time, 24/7, there is religious programming being broadcast in any and all media. This proliferates the brainwashing that keeps the faithful coming while recruiting new Jesus zombies to come and drink the kool-aid. As a result, billions of people have embraced religion despite the obvious lie that it is.

Can atheism somehow emulate this religious gameplan and should atheism even try?

Is it even possible or is there no way to popularize atheism if we have no false promises or claims of eternal life to sell? Should we come up with a bunch of false promises and claims in order to broaden our potential consumer base or would that just make us another religion but using lies to sell the truth? People clearly love to be lied to so long as those lies offer comfort. They'll even pay to be lied to as long as it makes them feel good -- just look at the ministry of Joel Osteen.

*CREATIVE EXERCISE😘 What lies could atheism tell that could compete with the lies told by religion?

Discuss.

Since atheism can't really promise lies based on things that don't exist like religion does, maybe we should lie about stuff that is based on things that actually do exist.

  • Atheism will add up to 3" to your penis!
  • Atheism makes you look younger!
  • Atheism will make you popular!
  • Atheism re-grows hair!

I don't know, shit like that.

Probably not.

UGH!

The whole appeal of atheism to me is its grounding in reality and facts. False promises would just result in it being more and more like religion or at least like any number of other competing hucksters abroad in the world.

If that means we're less popular, then so be it.

on the one hand it would be nice if people were more reasonable, and that would mean fewer of them would resort to superstition. on the other hand, spreading atheism as a philosophy would just turn it into a religion for some people and eventually there would be a god of atheism, stupid as that sounds. atheism isn't a philosophy. except to those for whom it's a condition (we're all born atheists), it's a conclusion. the conclusion is useless if the underlying process is missing. if you use your noggin, you realize there are no gods. that realization is called atheism. so what we need to spread isn't atheism. it's reason. atheism will be reason's logical conclusion.

I think it’s already begun to shift. You don’t see it much in the USA because of the evangelicals taking over. But, people in other countries are becoming much more aware. I have friends in Europe and the religious climate is different there.
