Sounds like to change the type of people you hang out with. Friends, colleagues or family. Remove any toxicity or bad influences, for your own sake, and you'll see things will start to change. Good luck getting sober and getting that job and I hope things look up for you soon.

Sometimes it seems true that "hell is other people" and I long for a cabin in the wilds of Alaska or someplace like that to finish out my days whittling tree stumps or something. But then I realize that virtually no one who is part of my everyday life wishes me ill; quite the opposite. And the few who DO wish me ill, aren't part of my daily life for exactly that reason. At some point I figured out that I don't have to put up with that crap.

All I can say is, people who are truly out to get you should be shown the door; people who mean well and try their best to do well by you, you need to be at least as patient with them as you'd like them to be with you.

sociologically people generally want to help not hurt

Don't be so paranoid of other people. I don't think most people want to hurt anybody, they just want to live a peaceful, happy life. There are negative people who thrive on others having a hard time, but most people aren't that way. Just try to avoid those negative people and you'll be fine.
