Woah! Can't remember the last time someone got the death penalty in this state.

One thing that strikes me as particularly hypocritical is how our governments will send our kids to commit mass murder when they feel slighted, or want something of value. We not only condone this sort of activity on a national scale, but we applaud it and make particularly good killers into heroes.

It was wrong for Garcia to kill in revenge. It is equally wrong for our governments to do the same thing. Whether by imposing a death sentence, or by declaring war.

Is that unusual a 3-panel judge to decide corporal or capital penalty?

I have no clue.

Not sure how I feel about this.

I have mixed feelings about the death penalty as well. One is that there is always a chance of human error. A guy named Jamie Bains was on death row for something like 40 years. Due to new DNA evidence (that wasn't available when he was arrested) it proved he wasn't the killer. If you sentence one innocent person to death, that makes us all murderers. Another thing is that it actually costs more money to put them on death row than put them in prison for life. It's not like going to traffic court for speeding. The trials are very long, and costs taxpayers lots of money. Another thing is that with lethal injection, I believe they are given 3 shots. One is supposed to make them not feel any pain. The other one stops the heart. Can't remember what the 3rd is for. One is sodium penithol. They have done autopsys on some death row people. Sometimes they don't even give them enough pain meds to put down an animal meaning they died in excruciating pain.

I'm the same I'd say.

@TheGreatShadow

I used to be more divided on the issue, but I finally decided if it is wrong for one to kill for any reason, then it is also wrong for all to kill for any reason.

I feel the same way about war. If it is wrong for me to settle my differences with violence, then it is also wrong for our governments to do so. Besides, people do not want war, governments, banks, and religious nuts do.

@Piratefish Definitely wrong to kill another human, unless you are in direct threat. A lot of people would argue that they will escape and kill again, or kill in prison.

@TheGreatShadow

I agree.

Most people who kill do so from passion. Very few kill simply for the thrill of it. And those who do, simply lock them up in solitary for the rest of their natural life. Our prisons today are virtually escape proof. The person in solitary has no chance of escaping short of developing super powers.

Besides, the risk of executing innocent people is simply too great to take any chances. And no one has the right to take life, unless, as we both agree, our life or the lives of others is in clear and immediate danger.

@Piratefish Yeah it's pretty hard to get out of a super max. One of the only ways is if you can bribe some of the guards.

@TheGreatShadow

Not much to bribe them with when all you get is a cot, some pajamas, and three meals a day. 🙂

@Piratefish IIRC that's how el chapo got out. Or one of the baddies. But yeah I know people that have been to prison. It takes like a week of work to get a small bag of chips.

@TheGreatShadow

El Chapo had considerable resources and influence. Bribing enough people takes considerable time and money.

@Piratefish I understand that. That's how Pablo Escobar went to "prison" in a mansion. I've heard he even killed people when in there and supposidly left the property.

@TheGreatShadow

Fortunately people like him are almost nonexistent. The average killer presents nowhere near the threat.

@TheGreatShadow and it is not given equally, same crime same punishment. Race, class etc have a huge effect on the death penalty as a form of sentencing.
