Interesting essay on the situation in Idlib by a comrade, and also a fellow at UNC's CSEEES. I strongly recommend his sober, analytical approach to these crises.

It would nice if all this could come to a peaceful ending.

No time soon, Bashir al-Assad will not let it and Iran and Russia are making sure he wins.

@Skeptic66 I wonder why they want him to win instead of just staying out of it? I forgot how this whole thing ever got started.

@Captain747ex Regional interests. Iran has only one ally in the region and a mini-Cold War with Saudi Arabia. Russia has two key bases there to give it access to the Mediterranean and Moscow also wants to sow it can project power.

@Skeptic66 Ah, I see. So there really isn't an easy way out anymore. Assad will crush the rebellion and make an example out of them to retain his power. Wasn't Assad loved by the people? What started the rebellion?

@Captain747ex He is an Alawite, a minority sect within Shi'a Islam. They support him mostly. Most people do not. He is a dictator and tyrant who used massive force against people protesting, igniting a rebellion based on long-term anger.

@Skeptic66 I think I remember. He made some policy that people were protesting and demanding him to step down and then he unleaded the military on the protesters. He should be in prison for using nerve gas on his own people.

@Captain747ex Yes, you remember correctly. He is a tyrant and needs to go.

@Skeptic66 Yes, we don't need people like him in the world.

@Captain747ex No, the difficult is how to get rid of him.

@Skeptic66 True, but it's not like the CIA hasn't done something like that before.

@Captain747ex This one is far beyond the CIA. Russia is there and so are Iranian militias. The world has learned about CIA covert operations.

@Skeptic66 Yes, very true. It is, indeed, a complicated mess.

@Captain747ex Yes, and foreign intervention just led to more deaths and suffering.

@Skeptic66 True

@Captain747ex The victims are the ones for whom I feel sorry. The governments are terrible.

@Skeptic66 Exactly. I feel really bad about the innocent lives that are affected by all this, especially the children that have done nothing wrong. It's terrible what has become of the cities such as Aleppo. There's nothing left. It looks like the cities of Germany after World War 2. It's just terrible.
