Why do some sections of the Islamic faith NOT like or permit music?

I am not sure which section.

I know that you are going to say what they are missing, how sad it is and that it is inhuman (which IMO it is). But what I really want is an explanation of why the ban was put in place.

Who put the ban in place? What happened to lead up to it? I know that ‘they’ thought it would be good for their followers in some way, but in what way?
What real effects has the ban subsequently had?

I think it is a different post for Muslims to find out how to make up for what they are missing or lift the ban completely. If we could just free their foot tapping ability then we probably think it would be easy, but in this post please desist.
