Theologist: The World began with shit. Very shit.

I have posted about meeting a theology professor at university. Due to the unsurprising amount of questions I have, he invited me to sit in a class of high schoolers he has. It was a Catholic school. In the room, I can say with confidence that these Catholic students hardly care about their religious studies class.

Basically, he was teaching about the bible. No amount of jokes could get the students’ attention. Many of them are sleeping. Honestly, why would you pay for this if you just want to sleep in this class?

And then, this joke came along.

Theologist: The Hebrew word for “in the beginning” is bereishit. With that said, we can conclude that the world began with shit. Very shit.

There was no reaction. If there was someone interested in this class, it had to be the know-it-all that everybody hates.

He also discussed about the inconsistencies of the bible.

Theologist: The bible is free from error, but there are inconsistencies. Though there are inconsistencies, it matters not. It should not affect our faith. The bible is written with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, God Himself, so why would it have any errors?

I was not satisfied. An hour of religious studies class is not enough to answer the questions I have. After the class, I had to ask this question.:

“If the bible is inspired by the Holy Spirit, it is free from errors, correct? What about scenes in the bible in which humans do unnatural feats without the help of God? It would be considered as a violation of the laws of Science. If God indeed wants a book free from errors, why didn’t he care to change the book or guide the author to the correct content in which the bible is coherent with the laws of Science?:

This is what he said. “These violations matter not, and it should not matter with our faith. I say this to you right now. The book of Genesis did not happen. And we can never know if it did happen. The creation story, Noah’s Ark, and several other stories did not happen.”

Unfortunately, I forgot the other things he said subsequently. This was his conclusion.
“It takes faith to believe in the bible. It was written by those who believe for those who believe.”

Right. . . How am I supposed to believe if I have to be a believer first to believe in the bible?

Remember that very few believers have ever read their "holy" book from beginning to end. Some of the pastors who went to seminary, mostly, ignore what that education actually taught them, some have used that learning with church members and got some nasty replies back from members. There are also some non-believers who say they like the biblical "Jesus" yet they also ignore some of the things that are ascribed to him in that book that are not very good.

A bridge player whom I know was a priest at LaSalle. He quit the priest hood because he couldn't deal with celibacy.

Reading the bible can make you a believer. Understanding the bible will make you an atheist. 😉

Very well said! I shall steal it fair and square!

very much true!

My daughter, raised as an agnostic Unitarian, went to La Salle her Freshman year ( Jesuit Catholic) and had an intro religion class. I mention the school's name because it has a pretty good academic status. Anyway, the prof said something to the tune that she didn't think everyone in the class was Catholic but still Christian, right? To which my daughter raised her hand. The prof had never heard of Unitarians (Just because they controlled Harvard and made up many of the founding fathers - take that evangelicals with no brain). So my daughter explained; she got an "A"

There are more changes in the bible than there are words in the bible due to the multitude of scribes and scholars who have re translated the damn book. They mis interpreted, or changed it to fit their own beliefs

We carried out an experiment in Psychology yesterday, pertaining to word recall in quiet or noisy environments. So the inconsistencies may well have entered the bible due the environmental sonic pollution at the time of dictation by god. In all the films I have seen about god, its voice always has a substantial echo.

That would make sense..
But once you allow the thought that the bible can have mistakes everything falls like a house of cards.
And "they" can't have that..

@hippydog er.. they aren't mistakes they are deliberates! and the word of god is true and correct, they only appear contradictory. Oh and Jesus spoke English, that's why the bibble is in English and not something silly like Latin or Greek...

The whole free of errors is what I don't understand
.

Especially those evangelical types who quote and adhere to the King James version (notoriously the worst translation of any bible, albeit, being a Shakespeare fan myself, I do think it sounds nice). I had an evangelical tell me the trinity always existed and it was never voted on. And then quoted one of the verses, which to that man's credit, was a verse used in the 300's to push the trinity into doctrine. So many have no understanding or interest in learning actual biblical history, that which can be authenticated from the 100's onward. No mention of the trinity as an idea, at least in print, until the 200's.

Really this professor is seemingly a great advocate for atheism. My goodness his arguments are worse than weak!

If god is real why does he need flawed, short-lived humans to love him. If they love him because they fear his punishment, is that love?

There are so many failings of logic that it could be a kindergarteners explanation of existence.
