I'd say it's like fundamental religion. The republicans don't dare speak up against their president and his administration for fear of persecution by their leader and owning up to living by principles instead of practicalities. So it this time they engage in denial, obfuscation and persecuting people who might expose them. Like a person will be rejected by church and family in a church in the republican party you should expect to loose party support and your job if you stand up for principals in this day and age. Any person who is not financially independent and who has kids knows they can likely not suffer the consequences so for practical reasons they stay quiet. I hope the population will make themselves heard in the next election but I fear the economic success will lead people not to.
