After the Parkland shooting, conservative hypocrisy rendered the phrase "our thoughts and prayers are with you." to be meaningless but they're still going to use it for every terrible thing that happens regardless.
A few days ago, Indonesia got socked with a natural disaster double punch earthquake/tsunami that left 840 dead. Atheists are capable of expressing compassion too so as an alternative to "thoughts and prayers" in an event like this I'm going to suggest we offer "hopes and wishes for better luck in the future." Or is that not sympathetic enough?
This is harder than it seems.
"my thoughts are with you."
Okay, so we just dump the prayers part. I think that works well enough.
No!! No we don't.
Prayer is simply the the single most vainglorious and self aggrandizing way of doing fuck all.
As an atheist I do not require a secular equivalent for that.
Condolences first, assistance if feasible... “thoughts and prayers” was no a terrible thing to say other than “we” being off the religious bit... problem is only that it became a hollow automatic response from people who obviously couldn’t give two shits, and they are the very people in positions and with the power to offer real needed assistance, which was not forthcoming due to greed, prejudice and hate... poorly disguised as giving a shit.
That's not quite it, but I agree, it's hard to come up with something that conveys the right meaning, but is still concise enough to use.
