So I have this theory that probably has far more factual evidence than I care to research at the moment. Because it can at times be a bit cumbersome trying to justify every epiphany. But getting to the point. Maybe it's hard for a lot of people to connect through conversation online or sometimes over the phone because the parts of our brains that control emotions such as the amygdala gland are not the same parts that control language. We know that at least 60% of communication is nonverbal. So that 60% has to be communicated differently. Maybe tapping into the creative and more abstract parts of ourselves will allow us to more authentically connect during communication. I wish I knew more about how the brain works. I'd love to hear other perspectives.

each of us uses the hemispheres of our brain differently, the left side tied to logic and the right to emotion and expression. Each person leans toward one side or the other, even if it a slight lean. Without facial expressions and voice intonations most people read text with a preconceived notion of where the conversation is going. A very good writer can mitigate this, a master can manipulate the reader just as a good speaker can inspire. Glean as many facts about the writer as one can (financial situation, past relationships, job history, past writings and opinions) and form an opinion. It is literally all anyone can do.

I have stated this same thing as far as this not being a good format for conversation and real connection. The phone is better, but that chemistry whether romantic or even friendship has to be in person.

I find it extremely difficult to converse without being able to read facial expressions or hear vocal inflections. Because I live in a rural and very Christian area, odds are usually good that the interesting people I meet on this site live an inconvenient distance from me. This makes it a challenge for any sparks to fly.

That is a really interesting perspective. I need to think about this more before replying. Very good post.

Do pauses, grunts or sighs count?
