Why do people take grate pains, and bear extreme hardships forgoing all pleasures of life in order to make more money than they need?

Because they're basically unhappy and they think more money will make them happy. It doesn't of course because they're unhappy with themselves.

Greedy,maybe denied something in their childhood, and now over compensating.
