Just as the USA has its rifle association Australia has its racing fraternity. The latest controversy involves Sydney's World Heritage-listed icon the Sydney Opera House and advertising on the famous Opera House sails of the wealthiest horse race in Australia:

Only a few years ago protestors were heavily fined for adorning the sails with the slogan NO WAR. Very few other than police and politicians protested against that action.

Go figure?

a sad state of affairs where a cultural monument gets defaced to further the cause of a so-called sport that exploits horses until their lungs bleed out through their nostrils. my loathing for all types of racing & betting on animals, very popular in straya, comes natural.

Good the news spread.

Double standards....nothing new there! I think nothing should be allowed to sully that beautiful and iconic building.

Though on a practical level I can see the difference between an act of actual vandalism and a projected advertisement, I would argue that the Opera house is an inappropriate venue to be Commercialised in such an act of cultural vandalism.
It seems disrespectful to the architect, the patrons, the artistic and the aesthetic purposes and their intent.
I am sure this sets a poor precedent that WILL be exploited in the future

Australia and NSW has had a bad history of disrespecting the architect Jorn Utzon:
