There is a difference.

the difference is significant in terms of the physical survival of each child. the difference is NOT significant in terms of how we are dividing humanity into "us" and "them" and treating "them" abominably; this kind of treatment can lead to the erasure of the aforementioned difference. the comparison is apt. "but that's not the same thing" is not a good argument against the comparison.
