What do you do to kill time before work? When I go to work, I just want to get started and get shit done, then go home. I've been self-employed for about 8 years. I'd start when I start. No waiting to clock in, no worry about being a minute late. I was a relief driver for a trucking company. Guy would call me 24 hours in advance and ask if I wanted a load. I never had to clock in. I could pick it up at 3 AM or maybe even 5AM. Didn't matter. Long as I got it out before the next truck was ready to load. Hell, I could have picked it up at midnight if I wanted.

Anyways, I am starting a new job on the 5th. I've worked for this company before (a fortune 500 company). They will not tolerate you being late. Inclinate weather is not an excuse for not going to work. You'll get points. No, not points like on here. I have an hour and 15 min drive to work. That's if weather is good. I need to be there early. Yes, I can sit in the break room, but that is boring. I could sit in my vehicle. But I can sit at home doing more interesting things. I think a lot of people would say check the net on your phone. It's not anywhere as close to as fun as sitting at home with a PC. If I want to reply to something, it takes damnation and a day to write a sentence. Need a damn toothpick to try and type.

So, what do you do?

I get what you are saying, but that doesn't work for me. I have never been diagnosed with it, but I have social anxiety disorder. I hate waiting even a minute in line at the grocery store, or a gas station. I just want to get what I need and get out. They have given me all sorts of pills. None work.

@TheGreatShadow nah, i shouldn't think pills would work, alas. okay, try this, crazy as it may sound. do what i do when i can't sleep: play versions of the initial game. some versions: 1. think of as many famous people with the same set of initials (bb should keep you busy). 2. likewise, but all first names of one initial. 3. likewise but surnames. 4. likewise but all the same first name, and forms thereof (for example, miguel, michael, michelle, mikhael, etc. all count as the same). it's silly but it really works. it's a way to stay inside your head until you're needed outside of it.

@genessa Thanks! I'll give that a go. Speaking of insomnia, a doctor gave me a good technique. If I can't sleep, get up and write a journal. Even if it's something as simple as writing down a list of goals/tasks you need/want to do tomorrow. That does help.

@TheGreatShadow one of my problems is not making myself lie down, so i think that while that may in general be a good technique, it would be disastrous for me because i wouldn't lie back down -- just as i am not lying down now, as i should be. i should be finishing up surnames beginning with b lol

g

@genessa Some techniques work for some, some not at all for others. I was told once to not have a TV on or anything. Sometimes it helps.

There isn't a cure-all for everyone.

@TheGreatShadow this is true. i see a lot of advice offered on this site which purports to be one size fits all. it can't be!

Good luck with new job by the way.

Thank you! I will exceed. This is only a temp position tho. I have an opportunity for full employment. I didn't get my sign on bonus because it was over 10 years since I worked there, and am considered a new hire. Oh well.

Invest in tablet with keyboard case. Typing easily on the go. Watching videos without squinting at time screen

I have a tablet. I just don't like to hurry up and wait. I have a type of anxiety disorder. If I'm at work and not doing anything, I get very fidigity. At home is different.

@TheGreatShadow I get that. Would work not allow you to leave early if you start early?

@Echo7 Worst I can do is ask. I'm pretty sure they'll say no. But if they need help, they might. IDK

I know exactly what u r saying . I have to be in my car at 5pm to report on work at 7pm . It takes easily 2 hrs bcz trafic to cover just 30 miles . Weather is not an excuse on my line of work . But luckily I make my own schedule and I work when I need / want . That eliminates weather issues , I have been known sitting home for two weeks when snowing ?
If I get at parking lot by 1830s , I catch up w friends texts / emails / calander . A last mouth wash ( to rinse out coffee ) , and walk in . U r gonna have to find something to do . Can u pay bills if u arrive earlier ? Worst case daydream ?
Congrats on new job ! ♥️

I'm trying to find a work from home job. That drive is gonna suck! I've found a few work from home jobs, but they are very hard to get. Lots of times you need a min of a bachelors (I only have an associates). Or they are asking for qualifications I have no experience with. Or they aren't hiring in my state. If I could land a job like that, it'd be awesome! The only excuse for you to not work is if you are sick (can't fire you if you have a doctors note), Or a cell tower or internet is down.

Plus if I can stay at home, that'd save me about $25 a day. If I have to pay for a wired internet connection (I use my phone or tablet), that's $60/month. Some companies will pay a percentage of it, some will pay for it in full.

Drink coffee, go over reports for work, surf the net, watch porn...Sometimes not in that order. I work from home so my day is my own. As long as my numbers are good they don't care what I do.

Pray tell how you got a work from home job.

@TheGreatShadow My home is my office. I am in sales with most days on the road locally. Today I took an "office day" which consisted of a few conference calls and mowing the lawn. I am getting ready to head out to the store to buy all the stuff for a date weekend.

The company is notoriously hard to interview with. Usually a power point "why hire me" type thing. I flipped it on them and told them I was going to pretend they were the end customer and sell them on their own product. I studied for days for a 40 minute interview. They were impressed enough to hire me. That was 7 years ago. I love my job!

I have Netflix on my phone and I download stuff that doesn't need a bigger screen for me to enjoy. Then I watch it before and during breaks sometimes.

Thanks for the reply, but you might have misunderstood. I simply don't want to be around most people. Watching something on your phone isn't very fun.

@TheGreatShadow Its fun for me.
