I think "god" had a wide range of definitions:

Rational people like myself and those I respect that value truth (things demonstrable with facts) over faith (things asserted as truth without evidence) recognize the widely accepted concept of a god as a fictitious (not demonstrated with facts) character worshiped by superstitious people who do not share our valuing truth/facts over faith/fiction.

For the faithful, god is some supernatural (not of the natural (real)) world) being that defies our understanding of reality.

From what I read, chaos was the Babylonian goddess Tiamat who was killed by the god Marduk. Apparently, the word used for chaos that reigned in the the Bible before creation has the same root as Tiamat but this time it is Jehovah that conquers it.
