Why are we afraid to die?
We will all die some day.
Is it because of religion?
I am a little over a year removed from cancer treatment and I was not worried during treatment that I would die. I knew it was a possibility, but I was not concerned. My mother is 79 and will die soon. I wll be sad when she passes, but I think death should be a celebration of the persons life and family. Most funerals are presided over by a religious leader and you are made to feel pressured into attending church. This is another ritual that needs changing.

There's an instinct of self-preservation that we all have, otherwise we wouldn't necessarily bother avoiding accidents. But beyond that I have no rational fear of death. Why should I? When I was young I didn't fear death, both because I couldn't personally relate to it and because I believed I was going to heaven which was a better place. Curiously, I have experienced theists to have more of a fear of death than agnostics/atheists. I have had Christians explain this to me as fear of the unknown. I interpret this as a subconscious fear that they may not have enough faith or done enough good works and could end up in hell, after all.

Why are You afraid to die? I have done so twice, and it was quiet & peaceful and pain/worry free.

Don't you think we are all afraid to die once we are mature enough to grasp the concept of loss & nothingness? Have you never been afraid of death? If not, how did you get past that fear to the healthy place you're in now? I think one of the appeals of religion is eternal life, or afterlife.

I don't recall being afraid to die. Once my grandparents started dieing I was sad at the loss, but never worried about it. As I've gotten older it is just something that will happen. I don't fear the unknown of dieing. It is just part of the life cycle of our species on this planet. Why woory about something that will happen no matter what you do. I thought I was living a healthy life and then cancer jumped up and got me. Now my mortality is more evident than ever. But nothing will change but when it happens. Look at the people around the world that fear dieing every day from war, famine, storms, etc. They have no control over when it happens. You have to live one day at a time and the time will take care of itself.
