It keeps us from being overrun by religious troublemakers. You have to make an amount of valid contribution before you are allowed to post freely. I appreciate it. Even closed Facebook groups are full of people who just want to ruin the discussion.

I didn't realize this because I hadn't thought about it, but that's great. A filter mechanism is definitely needed and it's better than making it a pay site for excluding destructive people.
Levels and points are merely a reflection of your activity on the site. Some perks are awarded at certain levels though.
Levels and points are NOT an indicator of status, seniority, or importance of a community member.
Just be active and enjoy.

you get access to more features as you gain levels, which you do by just participating. it's to reward participation. sometimes it leads to members' making garbage posts just to get points but for the most part we ignore levels and are happily surprised when we reach a new one.
