What did everyone do 3 minutes ago 11 11 11? Or at 11 am on Nov. 11th when you see this. I stared outside reflected on the vets, especially my Dad and looked at the two churches and wondered if they stopped for a moment of silence.

The Great War led to catastrophic disasters of millions of dead, wounded, and displaced. The Spanish Flu followed as did wars in Anatolia and the Russian civil wars. I certainly reflected and felt the sadness that we have learned so little and fight and kill each other still. I even posted a recording of the guns falling silent later on the Western Front.

I was at work, couldn't stop for it.

i was playing a game called howrse, thinking about lunch, thinking about my alzheimer's-afflicted guy and thinking what i could do for him, and how no matter what i do i will lose him, and not thinking about wwi, which is something i think about sometimes on other days because i had a grandfather and some great-uncles in that war. my grandfather was sent to brest, france, and never cracked a smile about the name of the town while telling me about it. he wasn't a doctor or even a nurse but he ended up somehow doing something with regard to wounded or sick soldiers, and so he learned, he said, not to screw around, since he saw a lot of venereal disease there among the soldiers and it was awful enough to make a lasting impression. he also told me how when he and one of his brothers enlisted, he was bullied by an antisemite who tried to beat him up. tall as he was, his brother was taller and came to the rescue. neither was bothered again.

remember, this is not memorial day. this is veterans day. memorial day is when we remember the fallen. veterans day is to honor veterans, living people some of whom need our help!

Good point. And when I think about my Dad, I remember his untreated PTSD from being a WWII combat and triage medic. On Memorial day I think of others who didn't return, like a still young man in my mind who just 45 minutes after we met for the first and last time was run over by a plane on our carrier.

I was at the Target Tabernacle to pick up some holy water-- er, coffee-- so I could better bless the world with my presence today. Then spending the rest of the day with my Vet dad.

I actually did stop and think about those who died during WWI and all others who have given their lives for our way of life.

i have every respect for those who gave their lives but i have no illusions either than those who died in wwi (which is not what veteran's day is about) did so for our way of life. they did so for reasons that most people don't even understand, and didn't at the time, either. even if you buy that it was about the assassination of the archduke ferdinand, which is only one small trigger, what has that got to do with our way of life? we can appreciate and respect their sacrifice without making it about something it's not about.
