Anyone whos given it any honest study would think its a bullshit proposition, yeah. Firstly if the god you believe in is omniscient he would know that youre only believing to hedge your bets, so youre insulting gods intelligence if thats your reason to believe. Secondly, whether or not there is a god or not isnt an either/or 50/50 proposition. Which one are you gonna bet on with this logic and why? Based on a lottery of which religion you were born into? Good luck.

@Pbpierson2 thanks, I can't take full credit. I think I formulated my thoughts on the first point myself (although Im sure Im not the first to realize that) and the second part I believe I heard Penn Jillette mention, so it probably came from hitchens or some other great atheist thinker too. I can only take a little credit for recycling it into a couple easy to remember points.

I don’t know what Hitchens says about Pascal’s Wager but I think it has deceived lots of people. Indeed, many who have never read Pascal conclude on their own--: “One has nothing to lose and everything to gain (=heaven) by believing, and one has everything to lose (=hell) and nothing to gain by not believing. So it is rational to believe and irrational not to believe."

I recently watched a bio doc on George Harrison. A very spiritual guy but he quoted an Indian philosophy that goes like this. "If there is a god? then you must be able to see him. If there is a soul? then you must be able to perceive it. If you cannot? Then there is no point lying to yourself and the rest of the world"
