Humans are racist. That's a fact. We are pattern-seeking animals, and our limbic system rewards us for noticing differences. Being racist doesn't mean you're a bad person. Acting on your racism does.

Is it racist to ask what racism really is?

Humans are biased. We are genetically programmed to feel more comfortable among humans who most closely resemble those that have cared for us. It's a throwback to the days of tribal warfare. There are studies that show babies prefer faces that most closely resemble "mom" even if "mom" doesn't look like baby (adoption).

Biased is not racist. Racist means hating, disliking or distrusting an entire ethnic group based solely on that criteria. However, since we no longer live in tribes and the genetic need for bias is no longer relevant, it's time to consciously choose to overcome our bias and be afraid of real threats. Like bears and sharks.

humans are not racist. seeking patterns does not make us racist. yes being racist, as well as acting on it, makes you a bad person. everyone has prejudices. some are justified based on experience; many are not justified even if based on experience because of small samples. most prejudices have nothing to do with racism. many do. the ones that do are bad.

People are racist mostly through learning. Children raised with other races, without racist modeling, almost never develop racism... until they are taught to be racist.

The evidence in eeh nature versus nurture argument in this case leans heavily on the nurture side when you look at the studies that have been done.
