I just handed some errant mail that landed in my mailbox to my neighbour, to whom it was addressed. It was a magazine (American) and purported to explain how/why we humans have different skin colours. My good neighbour invited me to take my time to read the full article and in fact the entire publication. I declined.

They also believe, no, they are absolutely certain that the world is a little more than 6000 years old. Hmmmm.

I wonder how they explain human skin variation. What I have read is that all humans can trace their ancestry back to Africa. Our ancestors evolved to produce high levels of melanin (black skin) to protect them fro the tropical sun. As people migrated north they encountered less sun, colder climes, and so had to bundle up. This decrease in sun exposure led to a decrease in vitamin D production, which occurs in the skin. Vitamin D deficiency leads to a disease called rickets, in which the bones are weakened and the child becomes severely bow-legged. People with rickets in prehistory tended to die before reproducing. There was strong evolutionary advantage to having lighter skin where there was less sunlight. Those that could absorb more sunlight with less exposed skin tended to live longer and to reproduce. Any genetic mutations that decreased melanin production were favored by the environment and passed through a line of descendants to modern peoples.

THese things usually seem to come in all together, I guess that when you have trained (or untrained ) your mind to believe one rubbish set of ideas, then the rest come easily.

Does he actually believe the earth is only 6000 yrs old?

Yup. People actually believe that nonsense.

He, and his entire family certainly do. Sad really. And the eldest has just begun university. I wonder if he will get a wake-up call anytime soon.

@Reklof I ask cause that's what I always use to see their level of crazy. I can deal with people of faith, but when it's at a point they start denying even basic high school science..
Well..
.. some people you simply can't talk with.

I'm embarrassed that my country seems to be the world's leading exporter of ignorance.
