Any ideas what to tell a five year old child, about Christmas ( Jesus birthday)!! Santa !? This Holiday season is putting a lot of pressure on me, since we don't have any family ( here in the US) or friends to celebrate , and on the same time we couldn't pretend that the Christmas doesn't exist ??

Lie to kids about Xmas and they may never trust you to answer their important questions.

sometimes is not so simple to just tell them the truth and deprive them the imagination . Kids have imaginary friends, they can have Santa as a friend for a little while.

The truth about Xmas includes changing seasons, family get togethers and other really nice stuff that differs by country. When I figured out that my parents bought the toys, clothes, etc I was real sad that despite telling me to not lie, they had lied.

I hope you and your son will have a happy time. There are lots of other people just like you, who don't have family. I will be alone on Christmas but I don't care, it is just another day for me.

Thank you, actually I'm not worried about myself, I enjoy being alone, but my child wants to celebrate and enjoy like the other kids in his class . So we're gonna celebrate and wait for Santa ?

@Shaghaf instead of "telling" your son about xmas ASK him what other people are saying about all special days of the calendar .....write what he says down and have him write the complete date day time he was born as his special day ....your birth anniversary his birth father details as you see fit ....Labor Day is the last Moonday of August unless it is changed by the politicians....next are bad days like Columbus Day which is being changed to Native Americans Day ..... Halloween costumes & candy ....Election Day Turkey day then xmas & New Years day is for the 2021 dates.... ask him what gifts he wants/needs ....what gift he could make for you .... his grandparents and other relatives can be sent custom cards in the mail.... there are many different religions in the world .... we Atheists are not religious but we can be happy with religious classmates neighbors and strangers we see in stores or places you go together.... magic is not real and religion is a game for us Atheists to play with religious peoples rules.... alleged gawds did not get a Jewish girl pregnant on this fake calendar.... just like Superman and other not real people....funny stories that are not like our scientific Atheist stoneh

@Larry68Feminist
Thank you for these ideas, now he's seven (: and he loves science as well as super heros and magic tricks. I'm trying to let him discover things by himself by reading and asking questions, but we still couldn't underestimate the impact of some TV shows and all the hysteria around Holidays seasons. It is challenging to keep a balance between what I believe ( or don't believe) and between his environment ( school, media, friends..)

In other places in the world Worker Day is on May first, not in Aug nor Sep

@Shaghaf fascist USA relabeled MayDay lawDay .... many cities and states honor MayDay but USA is anti-union pro-war profiteering....when I was 7 my school began to brainwash me for war in Vietnam for USA to replace France conquering the Atheist Buddhist majority for the catholic minority

@Larry68Feminist yes, it's true . USA spread wars around the world and support the worst dictatorship
ever, and then promote it as they're defending freedom and democracy. Unfortunately, their brainwashing machines, mainly the mainstream media, Hollywood and the education system, are so powerful .

I told my nephew that Christianity have won the world and we have to celebrate many occasions along with them ☺ ..

Jesus existed. He was a philosopher who tried to make people behave better by making up stories and pretending they come from an almighty fairy. His followers set up a religion based on his teachings, and to help it spread, they tied it to existing celebrations which had nothing to do with them, such as the winter solstice celebrations (which they renamed as Christmas) and the Easter celebrations relating to the revival of vegetation at the end of winter (which they didn't rename, so it's still named after an ancient goddess of fertility). Both can be celebrated without being a Christian and without being religious - they are great social events and that makes them highly valuable. Agnostics and atheists shouldn't reject them - we own them just as much as the religious liars (if not more so).

So Christmas is not Jesus birthday!? In my country to they celebrate Christmas twice, first on Dec 25 ( Catholic) and second after two weeks ( Orthodox) ..

@Shaghaf Its unlikely. For those of us who believed a character like Jesus probably existed believe he was probably born in the spring (not many lambs born in winter) Christmas was co-opted from a pagan holiday. In UK we have ties to it's pagan roots, such as holly, mistletoe and some of the other pagan traditions.

The facts.
