Which one of these would you support by increasing the numbers of these techniques in society ? Choose one only if you can

Debates or discussions?

You can of course use whatever ideas on the meaning of these two words you want, but my view of their salient points are as follows.
Debate : Use to attack or defend a defined motion , thus creating two opposing sides and deepening rifts. Used a lot by politicians who sometimes support illogical debating points just to ' win '.They sometimes can lead to war or drastic one sided action.

Discussion Used often amongst friends who do not always agree with one side or the other on anything but use the opportunity to learn. However sometimes how to shift a position at least nearer an overall conclusion or general concensus . Used more by diplomats trying to heal a rift between opposing factions.

Personally I wish all debates were banned especially in schools.

I agree that discussion is preferable in real life. I think debates in schools can be useful, but only if the teacher and students then sit down and critique the debates, the points raised, their validity, how the argument could be strengthened. Then it becomes an exercise in how to think logically, and that, I believe, is useful.

Can they not critique a discussion also. It the two sides thing for me as EVENTUALLY it would be best to work together but we do have a lot of misconceptions to work through.
