I am venting now,so bear with me. After my girlfriend,Sonia, passed earlier this year,I found myself heartbroken, depressed, and seriously out of sorts. Also,I found myself without any income as I had been taking care of her,and since she was receiving SSI,and workers comp there was sufficient income. Now,after I motivated myself to actively seek employment,I am feeling resistance from potential employers. Now is for me the difficult part; I had served in the Army, and received an honorable discharge. I have been noticing that businesses will state that former service members will receive preferential treatment due to the service, this does not seem to be the case for me.Also, while I hate to put my hand out to others not related to me,I had a gofundme account, and a request on Facebook to no avail. This is me,and I wanted to vent to release some of the annoyance I am feeling😲.Rant over.

My heart goes out to you. I was in the same boat when my husband past away in June. His VA pension and his SS were what we survived on. When he past, those two checks stopped immediately. I had a little in savings but would not have made all my bills for the two months after Richard past without the help of my friends. One friend put the word out to her co-workers and other business owners about my situation and those people donated enough for me to be able to pay my mortgage and utilities until I could get all the paperwork done with the VA and SS to get half of my husbands pension and his SS. It is extremely hard to deal with in the moment. I hope you will be able to find some work soon.

If you were a carer for your girlfriend, why can you not get a job in that field?

Doing those type of intimate things for a girlfriend is one thing, don't think I could do them for anothet

@WayneDalton If not what choice have you got?

Sorry,I was whining.Carry on as before.?

Maybe it is different here than USA, but it is perfectly acceptable to state you were a carer and as such were not able to work? I think caring for someone is an incredibly selfless thing to do and is an indication of a strength of character. I would be happy to employ a carer.

If you can pass a civil service exam the Post Office will likely hire you.

use your GI Bill and get some training immediately...or even go back to college. You will also get some money to cover living expenses by doing so. There is a severe shortage of semi-truck drivers...the school is short and you can be making money quickly. Swift Transportation will hire you right out of driving school. It's a good place to start.

The new thing I have noted is companies actively saying they will not give preferential treatment to veterans, etc. I think some of those companies claiming to do so are doing it out of past pro sentiment that is now waning.
Sorry for your loss. Anyone who helps out someone in the end is a good, worthy person.
Thank you for your service. And to lighten the mood: as a Navy enlisted and the Army vrs Navy football game upon us, I sometimes am torn between rooting for Navy, and then being in favor of a bunch of elitist officers having their butts whipped by other elitist officers.

Sign up, register with the V.A. I get letters about every day giving names of companies actively looking for vets.

How long were you with her? I am sorry for your loss...

you seem to have a plan and now have to stick to it...that is a positive thing...

I was with Sonia 27 years, and would do it again?

@WayneDalton I only asked because I was wondering if you had common law marriage rights...but you are not old enough to collect social security benefits yet....
