I wish I believed in hell, I truly hope people that scam the elderly would somehow be set on fire then put out and re-lit repeatedly.
I’m pretty sure my dad is being scammed but he won’t give any details, just how he’s gonna buy a new Mercedes sports car and give me and my brother and sister a bunch of money but this isn’t the first time. He’s been had before and I see no reason to believe that this is any different. Pretty hopeless.

I never thought I would give this advice but it happened with my family...I had to pry into their business secretly...checking my dad's banks statements, looking through mail, etc. Parents want to leave their kids something...I don't get that, but they do...my dad was always looking to win the lottery, publishers' clearing house, etc. I knew there was something wrong when piles of magazines were coming to their house...

Maybe if you and your siblings told him that you want him to have a good life now...not to worry about you guys...you could find out more information..find out his "plans"...be a detective...a sneaky one...

I was able to stop the magazine and the mailers...it was work...focused on making him spend his money now by taking the kids to the donut shop or helping him set up saving accounts for the grandkids and put money there...I also talked them into giving me limited power of attorney...

My mom agreed to never give anyone credit card information or cash without calling me first...I kept her up to date on the scams I heard about and called her immediately...more work, but worth it...

I agree...those that prey on the elderly are horrible...good luck

Can elder abuse or law enforcement, or state ombusman help? Find a scrap of paper or email to take to the police, they most likely have a file on the scam already. Then you & siblings talk to an attorney about taking over...sorry.

Oh I sm so sorry, thats awful for you all. I would echo the previous comments. Lots of positive strokes for the guy who is trying to do something marvelous for his children. These are wicked desperate people. This is why we are so vigilant on this site.

Conservatorship maybe?

If it's happened more than once it might be time. But only you and your family know for certain.

Not fun to be standing by and watching that's for sure.

I am sorry ? Don't push him . He is probably embarrassed ? Give him a hug if u can and just survey the damage and maybe later sit w him and make some rules ? I don't know .
Some People always pray on the young , the innocent , the weak , the emotional , the alone , the sick , the sad , and the elderly . Hug your dad man . He loves u , he thought he was doing something good ?
My opinion of course , u can write it on ice odviously .

Write it on ice. You have a unique and sometimes wonderful way of putting things Ms Pralina. My hat is off to you. 🙂

I took him out to dinner last night when he dropped this news on me and you’re right, he has the best intentions and is just lonely so he will talk to anyone. I hate seeing him get scammed out of his hard earned retirement. I’m the only sibling in town and my mom has passed. I’m currently digging myself out of a self dug hole and don’t have a lot of time or money to spend on attempting to resolve this.
I like your advice, I can actually do that.
Thanks.

@Schmoppo it's good that you guys talked. I would suggest trying to do anything to help even if it's just to sit down and take stock of the situation. Talk to your siblings about joint power of attorney (which can be next to useless) and see if they would be willing to help at least get advice from an attorney. I don't know much about the laws in NV but I am dealing with the fallout from this with my mother being exploited by a family member. I hope you're able to help your dad and he is willing to accept your help. I know the laws in each state are different but if I can help answer questions, let me know!
