My neighborhood church will always be my favorite. In my hood, we often spend Sunday mornings gathered at a neighbor's home drinking bloody marys or minosas and discussing religion. It's an eclectic group. We have representation from gay Catholics, Lutherans, Greek Orthodox, Baptists, and me, the sole heathen in the hood. The conversations are (almost) always friendly, respectful, and informative, but also include lively deep debate. There is no 'witnessing', attempt to bring me to jesus or prove one sect of Christianity is right over the others. Just people sharing their beliefs and traditions and trying to understand a little more about others. It's terribly refreshing and has greatly shaped the way I engage with (most) believers. Do you have believers in your circle with whom you can respectfully discuss your differences? I highly recommend it.

Sounds an awful lot like the Unitarian/Universalist crowd, which I am rather fond of. Many of them are technically atheists, but seem to take comfort in some of the outward forms and ritual of their more believing past.

That actually seems more enlightening and positive than "preaching to the choir" of like-minded folks. Everyone can try to understand the perspectives of others in the group, respectfully. That's amazing. You're lucky! Hard to imagine folks not arguing, but I suppose it's possible. How wonderful!

You had me at Bloody Marys.

Yes, I'm convinced it was the alcohol that initially brought us all together. I'm totally okay with that.

I wish there were a church like that near me?!
