The other day I had an appointment. The moment I walked into the office, I knew instantly that something was wrong. There was no TV set blaring out the bickering voices of talking heads. There was no music playing. The phones were silent. I experienced a phenomenon I'd only heard about from time to time in myths. I believe they used to call it "silence". It was disorienting, but I liked it.

I hate when I'm trying to read my book while waiting somewhere, and the TV is blaring and making it hard to concentrate. I never go to any appointment without a book. It sounds like you experienced something special!

Truly.... I asked them if I could just hang out there routinely 🙂

Wow. Nice!

That's why I live in the woods. When I step out side the only thing I hear is either the river rushing by over the rapids... Or the wind blowing! Obviously the birds, ducks, geese, woodpeckers, etc. But rarely anything man made except the occasional jet passing over at 35,000 feet or the old Stearman biplane that is part of the local air circus heading to the airport to refuel. I could never live in the city. Too peopley.

I'm verdant with envy!

Wonderful....that’s why the expression “silence is golden” was coined!

I deal with tinnitus and there is no such thing as silence.

You have my sympathy. I had that for a while and it truly sucks

Listen in the silence and you'll hear all sorts of things: clocks ticking, furnaces blowing air, the sounds of your breath coming in and out your nose. I've never experienced complete silence.

That's ok. It's much preferable to the constant barrage of elevator music and commercials we are generally subjected to

@TheoryNumber3 Sure is.

Isn’t it marvellous when the inane background chatter drops away and that deafening silence takes over. Fortunately there are many places for that happen here in Australia

Is that where you retired after Toys R Us closed?

You should take up meditation ?‍♀️ ?

@Mortal Amen!

Already do! But it's nice not to have to tune out the world consciously from time to time.
