I went to the post office today to get a po box. i told the lady that people keep stealing my mail so i needed a box. she said i needed two forms of id. i showed her a driver's license and my va disability card. she said the driver's license was fine, but the va card was not. i did not get my box.i told her it's really a tragedy when a disabled veteran is not worth even a po box. people wonder why veterans are committing suicide at a rate of 20 per day. it's because people tell us we are worthless.i am not even worth a 40 dollar a year po box.
lucky for me i have my cannabis to console me. at the dispensary they think i am worth something.

"One item must contain a photograph and one must be traceable to the bearer (prove your physical address)."

[about.usps.com]

@maturin1919 Searching at usps.com was useless. I found that via usa.gov, although even that took some digging. I hate all search engines these days. Google circa late 90's was far better.

That is crazy. My disabled military ID often has more credibility than my drivers license. I wonder if this is a state issue. Maybe there's a difference between my card and yours but still if it gets you in the VA hospital why not a simple PO box?

i told the ladies that this was a disgrace. crazy also qualifies.

As far as I know, there is no difference depending upon state, since it's all under federal regulations. They need one form of ID to verify who you are (photo ID), and one to verify your physical address. I think the latter is due to potential criminal activity, so they can find you.

@bingst I agree, my card is a standard grey DoD ID card with the standard horrible picture which shows my retired status. My late partner also had one which she had to leave home when traveling to Iran, her home.

Sad state of affairs. I luv my dispensary back in NH -they treat me like a whole person.

Since the very beginning of this country, they have screwed veterans. I am fortunate enough to be near a new and well run VA facility, but if were were to move it could be a nightmare, as it was in Austin before they built this new facility.

You have the other veterans. Any veterans need to talk to a brother, you know who I am.

it really helps to know people can understand

I am so sorry this happened to you...

.thanks for sharing your story...

thank you. it's good to know people will still listen.

Do you have your birth certificate?

Ask what forms of identification they accept.

they gave me a list. i really feel they don't need to know anything about my car or cable bill or whatever else they had on that list.

@sargentpepper

Why don't you want to show them your cable or electricity bill? There's nothing secret about it.

Yeah that VA I D card is as useful as a baseball card in the eyes of a lot of people and it shouldn’t be.
Hell if I had it my way the only way to obtain full citizenship in this country would be to serve in the military or to serve the people through the government.

Because just like you did you sacrificed way more than most and you’re damn near second class because of it.
I served in desert storm and I’ve been to the Va twice and that was in 2015 and was because I got a from DOD to get tested for something they believed that I came in contact with in Iraq.

The nurse practitioner was quick to tell me that she wasn’t going to help me get any money and that’s when I showed her my state employment I D and insurance card.
I looked at her and made it clear that I have all of my limbs, my sight, and most of my mind so I don’t need their money and it would be better if it went to keep a truly disabled vet from being homeless.

All she could do is tell me where to go take their test and where to come once they had their results.

Honestly I fucking hate Veterans Day because they shit on the old ones and they just keep making new ones.
Hopefully the post office will be able to come to their senses for you but if not you can go to certain UPS stores and they have secure mail boxes with a real street address if you need to have a secure mailing site.
Thank you for your sacrifice sir and have a better weekend ??

thank you for your support. i will check out the ups stores. i hope it's a good alternative

where you able to get the help you needed. there are some va's with very good people. i was lucky to eventually get to one. it took 25 years to get the help i needed. and they still give me hoops to jump through

@sargentpepper No I took their information and went to an outside specialist who gave me something other than a rescue inhaler.
And I know that there are good ones but I also believe that just like the disability compensation they should be for those who have limited to no income.

That’s the point of it they sent you there and you got damaged doing their bidding so they should take care of you because of that and they should all be good that should be the standard.
The same that we were held to at least.

It's not really a big deal..

To get a PO Box number and pick up your keys, you’ll need to show two valid IDs: one photo ID and non-photo ID. Your ID must be current, contain sufficient information to confirm that you are who you claim to be, and be traceable to you. Social Security cards, credit cards, and birth certificates are not acceptable IDs. The Post Office will accept a...

Valid driver's license or state ID card.
Military, government, university, or recognized corporate ID.
Passport, alien registration card, or certificate of naturalization.
Current lease, mortgage, or deed of trust.
Voter or vehicle registration card.
Home or vehicle insurance policy.
2

driver's license and military ID are definitely two acceptable forms of ID. i would call when you have time and get them to define why it's not valid. only one needs a photo by the way. they can make a fuss if the ID expired. but it's still you. if there is a huff n' puff over the phone, there should be a postmaster general in your area you can speak with. (i had to call in philly once and it wasn't that difficult to go through the ranks to get to the postmaster general, just not sure what the suburbs or rural areas are like.) good luck. and thank goodness for the cannabis!

i know i can give them a hard time about it, but i just want peace. and it's like joey says, eventually they will ask you for your fecal matter for id

2

What else do they count as acceptable forms of ID? Debit or credit card, passport, birth certificate, social security card, your Agnostic.com profile? If none of those work, give them some DNA like a fecal sample to prove who you are.

exactly
