This is really why English is so much fun. The author of The Chaos was a Dutchman, the writer and traveller Dr Gerard Nolst Trenité. Scroll all the way to the bottom for the poem. For best effect read it aloud. Enjoy. [web.archive.org]

Love it!

2

It absolutely does.

A comma would help with the grammar; but yes, words make sense.

(I probably would have dropped one after the second had, but that's just me)

FIVE IN A ROW

When writing the phrase 'fish and chips' you should leave a space between 'fish' and 'and', and 'and' and chips.

ELEVEN IN A ROW

A teacher asked two of her pupils, John and James, to show the use of the past tense by describing a man who had recovered from a cold.

John suggested, 'He had a cold.'

The teacher wasn't entirely happy, as John's offering did not indicate that the cold was fully in the past and recovered from.

James suggested, 'He had had a cold.'

The teacher was more impressed with James's offering. In other words:-

James, while John had had 'had', had had 'had had'; 'had had' had had a better response from the teacher.

I got a headache reading that sentence. 🙂

1

No argument from this English teacher.

2

I can only imagine the frustration involved when learning English as a second language! A complete brain workout!?

It wasn't fun...

@Kafir See...that's what I'm sayin ?
