Yes, we are a community of atheists/ agnostics, but what is the controversy about the word 'soul' when it's obviously not used in a religious context? The English language often fails us because some of the most profound meaningful experiences that the human animal encounters can oftentimes not be put into words.

Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.I think "soul" and "spirit" can be used as non-religious terms, just like we use "heart" in non-medical ways.
I use those terms in my writing, but I mean them to describe the very fiber of one's being, or the recesses of one's mind, the memory or passions of a person, and so on.
Soul and Spirit are intangibles, meant to convey something that has no distinct description, but are just known in the context for which they are used, by the surrounding words and ideas.
A song can have soul. A person can have spirit. These ideas are known by seeing, hearing, feeling, sensing in ways deeper than just the surface.

That's very true, which is why I have such a difficult time understanding how some could take such offense to a word.
I think soul is the distillation of the thoughts, feelings and experiences we bring to others during our life . It just unfortunately isnt a gold light with wings.
