As they should. Next we will see a teacher lose it and shoot an unruly student. [msn.com]
Or accidentally. I taught more than 20 years with some great people, few I would want or trust armed in a classroom. (Remember the Texas preschool teacher who shot herself in the faculty room?) I'm a vet and I would refuse to carry on a classroom. That doesn't mean I would not respond or attempt to help my students. It means that I recognize the inherent ignorance in thinking that idea will cure matters.
Even as a gun-rights advocate, I find several things wrong with arming teachers. Teachers cannot always be ready as can dedicated armed guards. Just wearing a gun in the classroom and in the halls, does not make one ready to respond to armed intruders (or to an armed student who evaded the safeguards), one can only have one focus of attention, either teaching, dealing with the students, or vigilance...not both. Teachers do not necessarily have the temperament required to engage in armed combat...the mind set is not the same as teaching.
Also, the concept of arming teachers seems to center on wearing a handgun. A handgun is not an ideal or even "good" weapon to use to respond to an armed intruder...a shoulder fired weapon is needed but is clumsy and would be problematic for a teacher to maintain on their person.
As a retired teacher, I am more than a little angry in that the conversation of arming teachers never includes extra pay for the extra responsibility...despite the fact that I am well practiced and have the skill set for armed combat, I sure as hell would not do it for nothing.
If the public wants the schools to be safe from armed attack, then they must be prepared to do what is necessary (not hap-hazard, make do with what you have), to make them safe..."hardened" facilities like all U.S. military installations in war zones (dedicated armed guards, proper weapons, and body armor).
Yes, that's what we need over-worked teachers, loaded guns, immature minds, and possibly raging hormones. That's a recipe for safety. /s
I'm glad the parents are making themselves heard.
