"We should all know by now that lawns of green grass aren't so "green" for the environment. Keeping turf from turning brown wastes water; people use too much pesticide and herbicide, toxic chemicals that can contaminate the fish we eat and water we drink. And keeping lawns at a reasonable height burns fossil fuels, releasing greenhouse gases and other pollutants into the atmosphere. Now a new study in Geophysical Research Letters shows that turf causes yet another problem, this time from the fertilizer spread to keep grass growing."

Use a scythe, an electric lawnmower with a long extension cord, or one battery operated. A scythe is good exercise and great for the environment. The mower with an extension cord is inexpensive to buy and operate, and does not pollute with gas and oil fumes emitting CO2, NOx and smoke particulates. Battery operated mowers are much better for the environment than a gas mower, but are not as good as a scythe or mower with cord.

According to [sites.psu.edu]
"Every weekend in the United States, fifty-four million Americans mow their lawns, which uses eight-hundred million gallons of gas per year [Springfels n.pag]. When broken down, that’s about 15 million gallons of gasoline to cut our yards and businesses alone. The eight-hundred million gallons of gas used each weekend is accompanied by the seventeen million gallons of gasoline we spill just filling up our tanks of gas each year, this amount is more than the amount of oil that was spilled by the Exxon Valdez [Springfels n.pag]."

I wonder how hard it would be to convert a mower to accept biodiesel, or even better a wood gassifier engine. Ive got a forest bordering my lawn, I could shove fallen sticks n branches in it as I go along ?

Theres nothing I hate worse than mowing, I want one of those electric roomba mowing robots so badly. Or an RC manual operated one I could pilot even. If neither of these is available affordably within the next few years Ill kill my lawn with salt and sand and make a japanese rock garden so help me bob.

There are videos on youtube that tell how to convert your mower to alcohol, which is a green fuel. In fact, you can make your own.

You should plant natural local plants i your yard, or make garden spots around it. Make paths around where you need to move. Make as little area as possible to mow or cut. I have about 5 acres I want turn into a natural field area with local flowering plants to attract and feed honey bees. Bee natural, Bee good.

Good idea.

That’s why I say grow food not lawns. My yard is covered in wood chips and I’m plant edibles where gras use to be. When I am done my entire 2 acres will be dedicated to producing food.

Wow, you will be busy.

On youtube Urban Farmer Curtis Stone says he makes $100K on a quarter acre. You have a gold mine, if you can work 48 hrs/day.

@EdEarl lol I have a YouTube channel work a full time job work on my planting on the evenings and every weekend and I’m Brock all the time. I must be doing something wrong. Lol

I live next to the river and only use iron pellets to green my lawn. They work very well. Try Ironite from your local home center.

Sometimes we must do radical things.
