I read somewhere that children usually do not remember anything before age 5. My son spoke in 3 word statements at 11 months. I was fortunate to be a stay at home Mom until he was 2. We moved when he was 1 so I started experimenting with asking him to tell me things about the old house such as colors and neighbors. He could almost always tell me what I asked. I had the theory that one reason for lack of memory under 5 was that memories were not discussed with children that young. He was 2 years and 5 months old when I had my second child. Sometime during my pregnancy, I did the memory game with him and he did so well, I started acting silly and asked him if he remembered what it was like before he was born. He responded with "Yes-it was DARK" So I asked him what he did all day then and he laid down on his back kicked his feet and pounded his fists while saying"Let me out, Let me out." I feel sure this memory was the product of an active imagination but I can't help but share it when early memories are discussed.

Wow! The earliest memory I have is of me standing up in one of those little wooden cages, they used to keep babies in, back in 'olden days'. A bunch of adults were sitting around, ogling me, and treating me like I was a baby or something. I can remember clinging to the bars of my cage, feeling frustrated at not being articulate enough to express my indignation! I think I might have been six months old at the time.

I think that someone described your birth often enough in front of you that you believe you remember it.

This happened recently with my daughter; I mentioned something her father did when she was 2 and she said she remembered it and I told her that it wasnt possible, she only remembers me describing it

Now gonna go read the comments lol

Too vague. When you are on the right (or wrong drugs) you can remember everything, lol.

That is unusual but not unprecedented.

2

Sorry, I don't think thats possible.

Do you remember me coming out right after you? 🙂

Would be interesting to know if your birth was the typical traumatic fast, cold air and bright lights with temporary separation from your mother or something more natural.

This study says that early memories are fictional: [sciencealert.com]
(So do quite a few others.)

I have my doubts.

My adopted daughter when she was about 16 months, she talked early, one morning stated "this is the life we're people". Ok, what were you last time? of course she doesn't remember this now.

My son, now 37, told me around age two(precocious talker) that he remembered. Well, it started with him asking me ‘hey ma, what happened to my cord?’, pointing at his navel. So I answered explaining it was cut at birth because then he was breathing on his own. He said, ‘ I -know- THAT. Where’s that cord right now?’ I told him the cord/placenta were disposed of by the hospital. He said ‘huh. I wondered what happened to that cord’. I asked if he remembered anything about it? His reply was ‘I remember my cord in front of me, when I was inside the apple juice. Then I heard a screaming sound, and I came out, and a little man was holding me, then I looked up, and there you were!’
He later forgot all this, but talked about it for months afterward. Who knows?!

I do too!

False memories, false or distorted memories can be a big part of what you think you remember.

My memory starts at about 2 or 3

2

I think your memory is fuzzy 🙂

And a bit of the slimy messy side of things.
