Scientists Explain How Digital Technology Affects The Brain!

By Sofia Adamson

"“We’re all pawns in a grand experiment to be manipulated by digital stimuli to which no one has given explicit consent.” ~ Richard Davidson, a neuroscientist at the University of Wisconsin

Does it ever make you wonder why so many people have a difficult time concentrating, suffer from sleep problems, and are becoming more anxious? Scientists from all fields, including neurologists and human behavior experts, are examining how digital technology affects the brain. Many are realizing that it may be a bigger problem than we think.

Companies, such as Google and Facebook, are very good at effectively employing psychological tactics that easily snag our attention. This keeps many of us glued to our digital devices, whether we like it or not. Yet, researchers are now realizing that because of digital tech, our brains and general wellbeing are starting to suffer.

This is especially noticeable when you look at children and young adults. These younger generations have become so addicted to their digital technologies that many have a difficult time taking several hours off from their devices, never mind a few days.

Let’s take a look at what four experts have to say when it comes to technology and the effect that it’s having on the brain. Perhaps these words will shed some light on the importance on being mindful of your technology usage.

Smartphones and EMF Effects
Because digital technology is so new, we do not yet really understand the potential risks associated with smartphones and wireless networks. But considering that most of us cannot do without our smartphones, taking precautionary measures, such as using a device that helps diminish the effects of EMFs, could be quite important.

Paul Murphy, Alzheimer’s researcher in the department of molecular and cellular biochemistry at the University of Kentucky, states:

Neurodegenerative diseases take decades to develop, and widespread use of electronic devices like smartphones, etc. is a still a relatively recent thing. So the scary way to look at this is that we are conducting a risky experiment with some potentially serious public health consequences, and we won’t know for another decade or so if we’ve made some terrible mistakes.

Digital Tech and Happiness
It’s true that most of our lives were invaded by technology, with most us not realizing the potential addictive nature of these technologies. Moreover, what we actually do on our digital devices may actually harm us and our children. Digital media has become such a big part of our lives that it can have a very strong impact on how happy we feel. Further, it can lead to stress, anxiety and sleeplessness.

Susanne Baumgartner, Center for Research on Children, Adolescents, and the Media, University of Amsterdam, states:

We find in our studies that adolescents [in the Netherlands] who engage in media multitasking more frequently report more sleep problems and more attention problems. They also show lower academic performance. When looking at sleep problems, we found that stress related to social media use was a better indicator of sleep problems than the amount of social media use.

New Type of Mind Control
Regardless of our willingness to limit use of digital devices, we aren’t always in control. Have you ever gotten on Facebook or Instagram to just check one thing, and 30 minutes later you were still scrolling through endless photos? This happens because companies that created these technologies are very keen on keeping us consuming as much digital media as possible. So, they are willing to use every psychological trick in the book.

Richard Davidson, neuroscientist at the University of Wisconsin Madison and founder and director of the Center for Healthy Minds, says:

Our attention is being captured by devices rather than being voluntarily regulated. We are like a sailor without a rudder on the ocean — pushed and pulled by the digital stimuli to which we are exposed rather than by the intentional direction of our own mind.

How Digital Technology Affects the Brain
This makes one wonder. If consuming digital media causes sleep problems, creates stress, and is taking over our thoughts, what are some other neurological impacts? Many scientists are researching this question, and many say there’s a potential negative effect on cognitive capacity. Yet, at this early stage of digital technology adoption, most research is far from being conclusive.

Anthony Wagner, chair of the department of psychology at Stanford, states:

The science tells us that there is a negative relationship between using more media simultaneously and working memory capacity. And we know working memory capacity correlates with language comprehension, academic performance, and a whole host of outcome variables that we care about."

This, like many other things people are now addicted to is subject to denial because they just can't imagine life without them now. Similar to something like cigarettes, sodas, crack or heroin.

Sadly you can shove all the facts you want in their face and they will either ignore it or deny it. Have you tried using the word scientists with the average person? I have. The reaction is typically "fuck science". It sounds crazy but I'm not exaggerating. The closed minded sheep become so triggered they will deny science as a whole. Even if throughout their lives they quote science when it suits their opinion lol.

Whether it be the truth that the food we are told to eat is poison and our bodies have no idea what to do with it or that technology is damaging to our minds in many ways. I constantly explain to people who complain literally everyday about how tired they are that it is the trash they eat and these phones we practically must have.

You will have people like a commenter on this post say things like there are other studies showing different. Obviously there are. But 1. The studies showing this is true outweigh those and 2. DISINFORMATION is THEIR strongest weapon. You don't think people who control every thing can choose which information is released? It's really simple. Spread enough disinformation with the real information. Confuse the sheep. Whether they believe or not they just won't even care. "I don't know, Hun! Its all so confusing! Screw it! Let's go get dominoes and Pepsi and watch the propaganda box with our growing babies!"

As I'm sure you must know this sends them into denial or even a rage! I've had people angry at me and say all sorts of ignorant retorts and silly pejorative terms. Simply by trying to help and inform them.

Mind you these people usually don't read. And if they read they surely don't read extensively and they definitely don't read long peer reviewed scientific journals.

My best friend whom I'm not as close with any longer not only said "awwww fuck science!", He also claimed he didn't need to read to know things lol. This view is frighteningly common. The hubris one must have to think that they some how gained all they know by themselves is shocking and depending on their position (I.e. politics) dangerous.

I feel that basic psychology should be taught in school. As well as neuroscience and things of that nature. But the Rockefellers wouldn't and didn't want that (for those who don't believe look up the early 1900 interviews with the Rockefellers and how exactly they saw education. They did after all establish the general education board 😉 ). For knowledge is power and if the average citizen understood at least basic psychology and neuroscience they'd be dangerous (to the establishment) and no use as sheep.

I've grown tired of explaining these things ad nauseum only to be annoyed by ignorance and cyclical arguments. Kudos to you for spreading the word. I'm trying to gain the patience to do the same but damn it my brain begins to hurt trying to explain such simple concepts to people over and over. The brainwashing programs really did a number on the majority.

My curiosity now is; what is different with people like us who that did not work on? Coming from a family of sheep like most Americans I look around thinking how in the hell did I come from these people and why didn't that propaganda work on me? This isn't new to me ive known since childhood it was all bs. What's more baffling is the amount of intelligent individuals it works on!

Anyways,

Great post!

I've read many papers on this very subject over the years, and the most I can determine, is that there is no determination, or more, a general agreement. many tests from many fields have produced different results.
