Our Supreme Court is Corporate owned and subsidized on behalf of the wealthy!

Nine years ago today — the day the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its abominable Citizens United v. FEC decision and unleashed unlimited secret money into our elections — I asked you to shed a tear for our democracy.

Our fears were well founded.

The Big Money takeover of our elections following that decision was even worse than we predicted.

Nine years ago, I also urged that you take no more than a moment to shed a tear — and instead get to work for a constitutional amendment to overturn the decision and rescue our democracy:

“The Supreme Court has lost its way today. Democracy is rule of the people — real, live humans, not artificial entity corporations. Now it’s time for the people to reassert their rights.”

What followed was more amazing than anything I could have imagined.

A genuine movement rose up to demand a constitutional amendment to overturn the decision.

Our constitutional amendment movement has done extraordinary things since the court handed down its decision on this day in 2010:

Nineteen states have passed resolutions or the equivalent supporting a constitutional amendment — half the total we need to win approval! — and we expect to reach 20 this year.
More than 750 cities and towns across the country have approved resolutions.
Thousands of people turned out to protest Citizens United at the Democracy Awakening demonstration in Washington, D.C., in 2016, and tens of thousands have participated in similar protests and actions around the country.
Millions of Americans have signed petitions calling for an amendment.

One of the biggest threats to our democracy is that decision.

Bernie Sanders campaigned against "Citizens United" and the wealthy one percenters found ways to sink his candidacy. They are destroying democracy just to get richer with more money they could never have time to spend. Unfortunately many Americans are uninformed and vote against their own interests and keep these despots in power. The rich play on people's fears of immigrants, and black and brown people, and religious hypocrisy to keep people voting for people like Trump.

It used to be that people could be genuinely proud to be a U.S. citizen. Today, we are ashamed of this country. I can't bring myself to even waive a flag anymore. I kneel for the anthem. I am relieved whenever I take a vacation overseas, and when asked where I'm from, I say Canada.

It is criminal that our Supreme Court has become political. I would accept a court that did not show any political preference rather than the present court. I would also prefer a Congress that voted on the issue and not the party line.
