Trump is under a lot of pressure now that the Dems have taken Congress and are pushing for investigations leading to impeachment. The only way to get some protection is to start a war to distract the public and boister his image but the Pentagon won't let him have a real war because he will screw it up. Venezuela has lots of oil that the corporate powers would like to get their hands on and its army is no match for the US juggernaut, just the sort of low hanging fruit that is need. War with Venezuela before the spring? Stay tuned.

Impeachment does not work like that. The House (Democrat controlled) starts it, the Senate (Republican controlled), conducts it. With the Senate controlled by the Republicans, it is not likely that Trump would be found guilty and removed. Even if he were, Pence would take over and the oligarchs would still dominate.

Congress is supposed to have the sole authority to declare war and when did that stop anything lately? The Republicans will abandon Trump the moment he becomes too toxic a threat to them, that's the nature of the political beast.

Hmm. Interesting thought.

The Iran invasion card hasn't been played yet. What's to the west of Iran? Iraq. What's the east of Iran? Afghanistan. I thought for sure at some point the US would launch an invasion by now

Between Russia to the north and China to the east, Iran is just too dicey a proposition, the supply lines are too long for a conventional war and a nuclear war could get out of hand in a hurry, that could bring India and Pakistan into the fray as well.

Good call, Eric.
Wouldn't surprise me AT ALL.

I'm afraid you are right, maybe Cuba will be next?

@Surfpirate Cuba doesn't have any oil, does it??

I am suddenly hearing a lot of pro-invasion rhetoric on Canadian media and the Canadian government has given its support for the leader of the current coup in Venezuela. Canada hasn't openly supported the US in their invasion plans since the fiasco in Libya, so it would take a lot of diplomatic pressure to get us to go along and put a good face on things should the US invade.

With all the oil we’re pulling out of the ground in the US, I wonder if Venezuela is as attractive a target as Iraq was back in the day?

Fracking is pulling natural gas out of the ground, the oil is harder to get and more limited. A strategic reserve of oil that is within the sphere of American influence is essential to the Pentagon and the Mexican fields are quickly becoming depleted. Venezuela sits on huge reserves that are not only geographically close but easily sourced.

@Surfpirate
Ummm - I’m working in North Dakota right now, using fracking methods to pull crude oil out of the bakken and three forks formations.
I know in the east fracking is used for natural gas, but we have a glut of oil on the world market due to fracking in North Dakota and West Texas.

@Haemish1 These are temporary measures, the Pentagon needs secure reserves going into the end of the century in the event that new technologies do not make petroleum obsolete. Think in centuries and not in quarters.

@Surfpirate
It’s interesting - we were supposedly at peak oil several years ago, and somehow they keep finding more. I think we are getting towards the end of usefulness of oil as a transportation fuel. I’m sure it will be used for manufacturing, but much less will be needed.
My hope is that in a couple centuries, we won’t need militaries, much less oil.

@Haemish1 The interesting phase will be when we reach the point where it costs us more than the energy in a barrel of oil to get a barrel of out out of the planet, that's not as far off as people would like to think. At that point things get very interesting but in the interim a lot of people will die so that a few can make excellent returns on the markets.

@Surfpirate
I’m amazed at all the work/technology that goes into getting a well into production. The last I heard it was about $12 million/well, and there are hundreds (thousands perhaps?) here. The breakeven cost I’ve heard is a bit less than $30/barrel. The success rate on wells drilled here is near 100%
