"You only have the constitutional rights you think you have if you have the money to pay for them." Bernard Kerik

Seems like a lot of truth in that statement.

And debtor prisons are back. Can't pay your fines or court costs off to jail, and in most cases time served does not reduce money owed. That went the way, mostly, in the 70's.

Yep. George Carlin said it well, we don't have rights we have privlagies, just ask 600000 Japanese Americans.

It's not just money, defending yourself takes time, energy, social and cultural capital, and other burdens. Basically there is always a cost to standing up for yourself one way or another.

True true. It’s not just about capital on hand in the way of cash and assets, it’s about time off from work, as well as transportation costs, and other expenses. It’s costly to fight in court. ??

@TDSkully Against an entity with unlimited resources.

@beenthere, indeed.

The U.S. is a plutocracy. This will continue until political power is decoupled from wealth.

It will continue because it has always been.

It can be ended, but humans are not yet civilized. Until we are, some will feel as though they must be led by superior humans.

The judicial system in 'merca can take your Constitutional rights away in a heartbeat.

There is no shortage of enforcers and highwaymen to help them do it.

@beenthere and it only needs to be for their convenience.

There are no such things as "constitutional rights".

SCal Level 7 Jan 25, 2019

But everybody thinks there is. But there is the bill of rights. I'm not sure there is really any such thing as constitutional limits either.

@beenthere

Perhaps technically there are, but in application of reality, its as though no such things exist.

Carlin would approve

That dude understood the world well.
