I was driving on US 40 in Denver to a meeting with the FAA when I heard it on the radio. I stopped at the local Marriott and sat in the bar wating th explosion over and over again. I could not move for an hour. Needless to say, thee meeting was canceled, but never rescheduled.
there ar dates in our lives thaat we remember exactly what we were doing, the wheres and whens. 9/11, both the Challenger and Columbia explosions, the start of Desert Storm, Sandy Hook, Columbine. These dates and times are burned into our minds.
The first date burned in my psyche is the assassination of JFK, I was in Kindergarten.
Yes! I was driving on the freeway when the news broke into my music station to tell us what had happened. It was stunningly sad! We'd become so complacent about space launches.....
Yes. And to some small extent, it is one reason i left teaching in the public sector and taught in private schools, then college, then went into counseling in social work. At the public school were i was working a large group of students cheered.
WTH??? why???
@SkotlandSkye odd little ninth graders in central PA
@SkotlandSkye, @maturin1919 Private school parents care what their kids do.
@Beowulfsfriend ok...but I graduated HS in Western PA....now I'm even more shocked by the reaction?
@SkotlandSkye It was in the middle school and specifically the ninth grade, which I would guess were led by a few as they were watching it en masse, about 220 students. Still, more than the leaders joined in.
@Beowulfsfriend that's embarrassing. I would have given them all detention and made them do reports on the Apollo missions.
@SkotlandSkye I had no authority. The principal was fairly weak and snuck out. The assistant did gave them hell and wouldn't allow the one leader to run for the student council, or some such school student position, which caused more upset the following week.
@maturin1919 I'm generalizing too much. But, many wanted the school to deal with all problems. Had a girl with a 27 year old boyfriend at 16. Now, as a mandatory reporter and new rules, i would report it to the state. Then, it went to my immediate boss who spoke to the mother, who approved. And the boss dropped it. That case was another reason I wanted to go elsewhere: the guidance counselor put his arm around my shoulder and lectured me like a life rookie, "some girls are sexual active at this age." No shit, Sherlock, I was in the military before my college. I didn't say that, but wanted too. I was a rookie teacher.
@maturin1919 they are exactly correct. Why I left teaching, the kids were fine, even the challenges.
@maturin1919 I wouldn't burn it all down. but a massive overhaul? Surely, I would agree. We are 47th in the world, so we aren't doing something right. My best classes, even with younger students were the ones I could run like a seminar, as in what we did in graduate school. Small, around a table, etc.
Yes. I was attending the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and the professors put the footage on so we, the students, could see it. It was so traumatic to watch. And all the way home it was being broadcast on the radio stations. Shocking still to this day actually.
Yes. Someone in our office had a portable tv, and we all gathered around and watched. Very shocking and sad.
Very well, the first time something of this nature affected me in an emotional fashion.
Yes. Standing in the dorm lobby at college before my 8 am class. Saw it in real time. Walked to class in a daze.
