Programming Joke

A wife asks her husband, a programmer, “Could you please go shopping for me and buy one carton of milk, and if they have eggs, get 6?”
A short time later the husband comes back with 6 cartons of milk and his wife asks, “Why did you buy 6 cartons of milk?”
He replies, “They had eggs.”

She forgot to specify, "if they have eggs, get 6 eggs." ?

I would have brought back 6 cartons of milk too!?

Right. I see this kind of thing happening all the time.We so need to pay more attention to how we use our words.

or how we buy our milk

Like many IT people I am a linear / literal / concrete thinker, and can, shall we say, miss certain metaphors. But I'm not that bad. I don't think.

well we know the wife doesn't speak punctuation when she asks questions... 🙂

This is one of those jokes I really like, but a lot of people I've told it to don't get it or don't think it's funny. (I've always heard it as being a logician, but programmer works just as well.)

in the eye of the beholder so to speak...
