I still think it funny that people won't recognize that global warming has been occurring since the last Ice Age. Quite consistently I might add, with short periods of quicker temperature rises, and as well, short periods of slower rising. I.E. the Medieval Warming Period, not caused by an overabundance of blacksmiths. Or the Little Ice Age, not caused by global efforts to reduce blacksmith pollution.

Apparently the recent warming trend is not all that unprecedented:

[google.com]

The current rate of warming, determined by satellite measurements since ‘79 is 0.13C per decade or 0.23F. On average, Boston is 3.6F colder than New York City, At the current rate of warming Boston will be as warm as today’s NYC in 157 years.

It doesn’t seem like much of an emergency to me.

We should actually be heading towards the end of an interglacial period but the release of CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels has put that back some way.

You might want to check out the data again, because what you say is ridiculously naive. Look how long those "short" periods of quicker temperature rises took and compare it to today.

Those who are ignorant of science and it's accomplishments will forever error in their read of what is happening right before them.

What happens before me is irrelevant, as life is short, and if I judge based solely on what it is before me, I would be a true fool

@SoullessHeathen Then u would be in the dark ages and I do not think you are that kind of person being on this site.

I can't begin to say I am anywhere near an expert on the environment, but common sense would tell anyone that the global advances we're making are indeed a hindrance on the environment. I have no doubt we will start seeing the effects of this in full force very soon.

@OwlInASack is the frequency of "extreme" weather events higher than ever? Or is record of modern weather more prevalent than it was over 100 years ago?

@OwlInASack so what you are saying is we were due for it? Nothing good last forever. Inevitably, the earth will no longer be a planet that possesses a "Goldilocks" zone, as described by scientists searching for life elsewhere. We are halfway through this planet's life cycle. What I do know for certain, is humanity, and all other creatures thrive in warmer climates.

@OwlInASack I know many who have survived hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.

@OwlInASack many more survive, by a landslide margin, than those who dont, and unfortunately in the case of predicted weather events like hurricanes, those who perish are those too stubborn to heed warnings when they were told to evacuate.

@OwlInASack also, you fail to acknowledge the fact that global warming inevitably leads to ice ages, not long after the warming ceases. The past two years have seen GLOBAL temperatures drop sharply. Al Gores hockey stick graph was relevant in 1998, but the continuing trend has not been what he predicted. Multiple glaciers around the world have actually increased in size in the past 3 decades consecutively , will link them shortly.

Umm, Everybody has noticed, and that's why they take those core samples from glaciers, they can see Exactly what went on, when.
The problem is the speed at which this is changing now...we will not have millenia to adjust!

Also, there are some hypothesis that indicate that change will not happen gradually but in quantum leaps based of domino effects of critical systems like: lack of snow cover in the Arctic accelerates heating (since snow reflects light) which in turn melts the permafrost which will release trapped methane which in turn traps more heat in the atmosphere.
