It's not a matter of religion being outdated. It's the Iron Age sheep and goat herders being so terribly outdated. A study of Jesus shows that he apparently believed every word of the Old Pesterment. I can die for myself but until I do I'll just keep on putting my sins on a goat and driver him off into the wilderness.
