A Facebook acquaintance brought up an idea to rebrand Democratic Socialism. It is too easy for the right and libertarians to decry since socialism in the US has had a stigma since the '50s. His idea is to rebrand as "Ethical Capitalism" and watch them contort themselves trying to say it's bad and evil. (especially the current occupant of the oval)

The government's goal will be the greatest good for the greatest number of people, and to accomplish that goal they agree to never try to control any price or wage. The results will be even better than what we have now, which is pretty good.

I think that the real problem is that too many people conflate "social" programmes with "socialist" programmes. Of course re-branding will probably be quicker and cheaper than actually educating the populace, but it will have to happen one day.

Hi Veteran, is it true to say that social programs are voluntary? Do you voluntarily pay your taxes, which fund the social programs? Or is the push against where and how the is spent? To my mind any number over a million that is benefitting, say like with Medicaid or Medicare, is not socialist, but socialised, or social support. Could you provide an example of a socialist program in the US and why yuou think that it's so? That way I can try to understand your frame of reference.
Some years ago I met an economist from Wisconsin, was working on “high road” socially responsible capitalism / economic theory ~ COWS ~ sounds similar. Raging headache or I would look it up now...
