It would be good if atheists were instantly recognisable, both by fellow-atheists and by... those others. Not only would it improve communication between us but it would help make atheism an accepted part of the everyday world, which, in some cases, it now isn't. Does anybody have an idea for an easily recognised symbol or acronym that could be publicised world wide and worn as a lapel badge or a T shirt or a tattoo?

As atheists to be recognized as something other than satanist's or evil people we need to organize in the community. We need to be seen doing something ,food kitchen's, working with the poor, endorsing candidates for office. At present we are seen only as trouble makers who attack religious beliefs. We are not understood and actually we are feared by many for what we do not practice. The symbol for infinity I believe would make a great symbol, as my beliefs have no limits or constraints . It would be nice to meet with people that have the same beliefs. I am sure that any building that we would identify with would be subject to vandalism immediately however and it would be difficult to get insurance!

I have a red A on the back of my van from Dawkins web site.

Among the atheist symbols I've seen, some of the A's (scarlet or otherwise) are encircled. I would be wary of anything that comes close to the anarchist circle-A (which often appears in red or black). So if we are going to use a capital A, then imho there should be no circle.

We should also go for an international symbol. The Atheist Alliance International (AAI), founded in 1991, has received special consultative status from the UN as of 2013 in the interest of attempting to protect atheists from persecution by their governments. The AAI's initial symbol was an encircled capital A, nevertheless distinguishable from the typical anarchist circle-A because the latter is more printed, and that of the AAI had a more cursive feel. However, it would appear that the AAI has changed its symbol, and I like it better now. It is even scarlet, although not italicized like Dawkins'. I've linked to their website.

How about big capital "A" tattoos on our foreheads?
