Life has no inherent meaning. It just is. But we humans give our life meaning. We do so through what matters to us.

For me, sharing my life with caring people and loving them makes my life matter more to me and gives me purpose.

No. One day that might be true, the next it is the accomplishments that I have done for that day. This sounds like part of a brain wash technique -- so one always thinks they are loved regardless of the reality.

I have been thinking meaning is contrived. Life just is. Whether it ends today or 50 years from now doesn't matter much. At every bedtime the ledger is balanced and discarded.

no, i do not. it is not how we are loved. it is how we love.

What was Norm's advice to Sam at the end of "Cheers"? Seems like it was along the lines of loving something--a person, a career...something. I can't remember how it went.

Well....If that's true,...my day sucked.

I'd like to think that even if nobody knew I existed that I could still live a meaningful life by doing good works anonymously and helping indirectly to improve people's lives. I might be terribly lonely without others' love, but I don't think that's the only measure of value in one's life. (At least I hope that's the case, because there aren't many people who feel very strongly for me — but I think I'm a generally good person who's made some small, positive difference in others' lives.)

Not just how we are loved, but how we love others. Of course, people can find meaning in other things, but its usually something they love.

No. I don't look for "meaning" from others, or how they feel about me.
If you or anyone else chooses to do that, that's up to you.

What gives our lives meaning is whatever we decide is meaning. If yours is how you are loved, then that's your meaning. Go with it and enjoy.

Prolly different for each individual. Love is one of those things that has a pretty flexible set of definitions.
