I always had a hard time in language classes. I was told the best way to learn a language is with a schlafendes Wortebuch.

You want to explain that, please?!

Umlaut U was always my weak point.

Seriously now: go to Google Translate; write the English term in one box and select German for the other box. Then click on the speech icon. Then make like the dog in the meme.
By the way, all Umlaute can also be written as ae; oe; ue. And the letter ß can be written as ss ( but we avoid that for obvious reasons )

@Spinliesel I have taken many German language classes and lived there 15 years. I finally learned by spending time with a neighbor who did not speak English. My biggest concern was vocabulary. As an Ami I knew I would always have a heavy accent but didn't care because I wanted to build my vocabulary. I use Babylon for some of my letters. This doesn't give a perfect translation but I can at least find words that are not in my small dictionary. After so many years my Deutsch is waning.

You are thinking of Tür - door.

@Spinliesel ah.....yeah, it didn't stay, i was not the star pupil.

door
You can write it with an English keyboard Tuer. That might help in pronunciation as well.
