Happy to have discovered this group...in south texas where I live there are not many like-minded folks around so its nice to have an outlet such as this...
Welcome, @foxymimi48! I'm in North Texas and it's pretty much the same here so it's wonderful to have this refuge to escape to.
I can't imagine what its like for you there, although I have 2 friends who just recently moved here to Canada, some of the stuff they tell me, holy cow. We are pretty lucky here, if anyone is religious you would never know. I have an employee who's wife drags him off to church every sunday, it doesnt seem to be helping, hes a nice guy but she's a nut job. he doesnt talk about churchy things but the 2 times a year i see her, she references her "pastor" immediately like anyone friggin cares, we all just ignore her and look for an excuse to get away from her.
I find that the only social scene in which I am always able to express my worldview without being verbally attacked is in the punk rock world. Since I enjoy the music and cultural history of punk there's always more interesting topics to move onto once we've bemoaned religion and politics for a bit.
Southeastern New Mexico roughly 7 miles from the Texas border. Church on every corner here and knee deep in Southern Baptists, fundamentalist Born Again evangelical Christians, and Mormons. We have a few other types of wacko farms here, but those represent the majority. You have my sympathy, foxymimi48.
FoxyMimi48, I recommend you check out 'Houston Oasis'. Great atheists, agnostics, and free thinkers, there. You can contact Mike Aus, the group leader through the Houston Oasis website. Mike Aus is a very good fellow and helpful.
While it's kinda fallen since then, I found the Atheism subreddit incredibly helpful in talking to like -minded individuals. Helped that, at the time, it was concerned a "default" subreddit and included on each new account.
It was only when I came online and started talking to atheists around the world that I realised just how hard it is for other people. Western Europe really doesn't attach any sort of stigma to atheists at all. Most of the time, you won't even know if someone is religious or not; Muslims are an exception. They'll often at least wear a headscarf if they're female.
