Has anyone ever tried "dry needling" (not to be confused with acupuncture), for acute muscle pain or spasms? i have some muscles that are just so tight, and even with massage, chiropractic and acupuncture, just seem to seize up right after treatment.

For tight muscles, stretch before and after exercise. Hold the stretch for over 30 seconds, and you will get a deeper stretch.

Every day.

Don't discount the value of stretching both before and after exercise. Since I'm not disciplined enough to do it myself, and I can afford it, I hired a guy who could doubtless bench press twice my weight, to manhandle me once a week after putting me through a workout ... as the product of six decades of being a body-neglecting brain-in-a-vat, I was so tight and knotted up that I don't think I could have undone it any other way. Although I had to learn to disassociate from pain in new ways during the actual stretching, it really mitigated the after-effects of working out.

Then I was just left with core strength and balance issues to address. As my trainer said, rather too gleefully, "I'm going to spend the first six weaks breaking you down and then we'll start building you up."

Damn near killed me but I'm the better for it. I think. Time will tell, I'm not quite through the "breaking down" phase yet.

I had a frozen shoulder for awhile a few years ago, and that was basically a matter of stretching too ... running it in circles and damn the pain, and after about a month of that it was nearly good as new. After three months I had full range of motion and zero pain. But you have to hurt yourself to get there.

i'm not talking about before or after exercise. i have 5 herniated disks, scoliosis and am looking forward to a hip replacement, probably within the next year

@coralisthree Urk. Not a good place to be. I am (or was) headed in your general direction due to neglecting my body (not at all saying that's the only way to get there, it just happens to be the cause of my problems). Hope you can find the doctors and expertise you need. FWIW my wife has had some chronic back issues and found relief with a pain specialist rather than the other kinds of practitioners she's been to (via radio frequency ablation). Even that is probably the luck of the draw, they are all over the place in terms of diagnostic ability, rigor, and skill, and of course, every patient's situation is different.

What is dry needling?

[en.wikipedia.org]

@PalacinkyPDX they are bigger. rather then using acupressure points to treat a wide range of ailments, dry needling uses bigger needle to break up tight muscle tissue

No Coral but I had a tens unit which uses electrical shock and works. You can buy them over the counter not like Icy hot.

i have one, it doesn't really work for me

@coralisthree sorry is it one you can regulate yourself? THC gummies help me immensely.

@sassygirl3869 it is. edibles aren't legal here, and i can't afford MM. i do smoke, but am out of weed right now. i just asked because i woke up with a horrible muscle spasm this morning. i'm going to investigate dry needling when i get back to the cities.
