"What I derive from such events in history is that no authoritarian structure, no matter how powerful it may seem, is really impregnable - that it can in fact be brought down."

i wish i had her optimism. ordinary people (the unconnected) are now very vulnerable b/c of fiat currencies. there is no way that the US & it's minions would have been able to incur all these incredible national debts under the former gold standard which Nixon abolished in 1971. people & nations are becoming debt slaves. pensions that most people were counting on will be much reduced.

i think we're well on the way to an Orwellian future.

@ToolGuy ,
i think i understand it better than you.
all you need to know is that ordinary people could hold gold and not be hostages to corrupt govts & subjected to financial, manipulations...no longer applies.

@ToolGuy ,
do you even know what fiat currency means?

@ToolGuy ,
OK, here's an example of how people can protect themselves with gold. over the last 6 yrs our canadian $ has deoreciated by about 35% against the USD. iow, if all your financial holdings are in CAD you've seen your purchasing power decline by about 35%.
but guess what? gold has not depreciated against the USD & has retained it's purchasing power. the people in Venezeula who held gold have not seen their purchasing power ravaged by inflation.
the US govt could any time it wishes devalue it's currency by fiat, thus fiat currency. they choose to be less honest & do it by inflation. every fiat currency in history has gone to 0.

I can see this playing out in our current social order...exactly what she sees! Everything, which was once ‘common domain ‘ is now being...‘for profit,’ driven. Even the misery of the common man, is exploited for profit. Example, traffic tickets, and other minor infractions are used in support of the police department. When I have been in those courts, it was mostly the poor that was in that court room and they were charged with some of the most minor of offenses!
