I feel ashamed about the man who killed those poor Muslims in New Zealand. I feel ashamed that one of our own Australians did that. I am sorry for what he did, most of us here in Australia don't condone what he did.

I have lived equally in Australia and the U.S. I am a citizen of both, have a love of both and proud of neither. There is racism in both countries. Having said that I was not at all surprised to hear that the shooter was an Australian White Nationalist.
There is not a day goes by that I don't hear someone here voice their racism albeit in subtle and accepted tones. I have had many conversations where, always, always, they describe people that they are talking about as this Asian lady or that African person or those Muslim people but never have I once heard them start off by describing people as Australian, White, Irish or Jewish or Catholic. Or, this lady was African but she was nice or he was Indian but I could understand him. I have had friends of color who have had racist names yelled at them in public places.(in the 1980's). I have grown up with this subtleness. It is part of the Australian DNA. If someone were to ask me if Australians are racist I would say hell yes...yes they are. They just don't realize that they are and that is dangerous. It makes it acceptable.
My view point has been formed from that of a privileged (in that I am white) 65 year old white person with a bi-racial daughter.

I do not expect all Muslims (nor Saudis) to apologise for what Bin Ladin did, nor would I ever dream of expecting you or any other Australian to apologise for what this scumbag did or would I apologise for something a British person did. You have nothing in common other than having been born on the same landmass.

I have never been to Australia (but would like to). But one thing I am sure of is that the Australian shooter does not represent Australians.
